At Smart Smiles Orthodontics, the most common phrase we hear our patients say after finishing their orthodontic treatment is, “I wish I’d done this years ago!”.
While it’s certainly true that there is commitment involved in having any kind of orthodontic treatment, new advances in orthodontics mean that it’s easier than ever to achieve the straight smile of your dreams. If you’ve been considering Invisalign as an option to straighten your teeth, read on to find out more about this fantastic treatment.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign braces are clear aligners that look a bit like a retainer or mouthguard. They are sometimes referred to as ‘invisible braces’ which is where they get their name from.
The great thing about Invisalign braces is that they are removable, so anytime you are eating and drinking, you can easily take them out. You can also remove them when brushing and flossing your teeth which is an amazing advantage in comparison to fixed braces, as this allows you to easily maintain your oral hygiene throughout the duration of your treatment.
How Does Invisalign Work?
First of all, the friendly team here at Smart Smile Orthodontics will have a full consultation with you to determine if you are a good candidate for the Invisalign treatment. This often involves taking x-rays and a full assessment of your teeth and jaw alignment.
Additionally, the team will use incredible 3D computer imaging to create a digital ‘model’ of your teeth – you can even see the expected end result of your orthodontic treatment which patients (and our orthodontists!) often find really exciting!
The team then create your aligners and begin the process of gradually shifting your teeth. You will receive a new set of aligners every two weeks for the duration of your Invisalign treatment. Treatment time varies between each individual but can anywhere between 9-15 months. Each aligner is slightly different than the last, which allows your teeth to move into the desired position quickly and safely.
Once you have your aligners, you need to wear them for 22 hours each day, only removing them for eating, drinking and looking after your oral hygiene. You also need to ensure you clean the Invisalign aligners frequently to avoid any decay or other oral health issues. Regular check-up appointments are necessary to ensure that your teeth are on the right track.
